Almost every mid(?)-sized sedan (at least that I’m shopping for) is larger than my LR4.

Lr4 length x width: 190x74

Volvo S80: 191x74

BMW 535: 193x73

Mercedes E: 192x73

The C class and S/V60 are a bit shorter at 186 and 183 respectively, though both are still 73” wide. As a comparison, our outgoing CRV is 179x72 and barely fits in the garage next to the Landy. Like so tight that a passenger can’t get in because it’s up against the wall.

I’m not sure if this is a failing of the modern car, or whoever designed my garage.

Best color LR4 for your time (not mine).

I had an LR3, they really are compact. It was great for parking and fitting it into smaller spaces. The interior was decently roomy too, all things considered.

We have a 2013 LR4 we got a year ago for off-road duties, and it’s absolutely amazing. The interior feels bigger than my moms old suburban, and it’s so light inside it. The exterior is so tiny, easy to park, fit in tight places, and make it down narrow trails.

Another obscure  fact: in some markets the Discovery is called the LR4.

Had any issues with it? They’re on my radar, but horror stories about the old ones and living in a rural area with no dealerships nearby has me a little weary!

I go to the local auto parts store and call it a Disco 4 just to fuck with em.

They’re easy as hell to deal with. Now, certain parts are pricy, like body parts, but for regular maintenance? Anyone that can work on a Ford truck can work on an LR4. It’s basically an amalgamation of an F150 and a 5 series, if that makes sense.

I spent a fair penny to have the front suspension redone at a LR dealer, but there wasn’t anything special about the work (I just happened to be at the dealer). The V8 engine has an issue with the timing chain tensioner that WILL require it be replaced eventually, though I’m at 105k and it’s just starting to be something on my radar. This is the biggest issue with the LR4 and it’s about a $4k dealer fix . Only other major problem is that the air suspension (like all air suspensions) will need parts thrown at it over time, but again that’s not hard and there’s aftermarket parts that are just fine. I do all of my own maintenance and it’s not rocket surgery.

The interior plastics are a bit harder than you’d like, so they rattle when cold. Leather quality is excellent, stereo is excellent, and I’ve had fewer electrical issues than in a VW or Subaru.

I’m sure others will chime in with stuff I’m forgetting, but basically it’s as solid as you could hope for in a luxury vehicle.

It’s been excellent so far, it needed control arm bushings, but just ended up replacing the whole thing. It only has 50k miles and has another 2 years of warranty, so that’s not too bad. I am a little worried once it does go out of warranty, but I don’t think it’ll be as bad as people say.

That’s really good to hear. 30-40k mike examples are mid to low $30k range now, so they’re getting reasonable. Do you have the B8 or the SC V6?

The 2013 V8 is the best year. They fixed the timing chain tensioner issue in the V8s for 2013 (which could cause engine failure in older ones, and the repair is like $2-3k at a good shop to fix it before your motor blows up). SCV6 is a good motor, but it isn’t the Jaaaaag V8 which is the most reliable V8 ever put in a Rover. Also, once they went to the V6 it became VERY hard to find one with a two speed transfer case.

The LR3/4 is the most best Rover to get. Fixes aren’t too difficult are hard, the only issue is parts availability... you can’t just go “get” the part you need around the corner. After spending a ~$3-4 00 on good computer dongle for the truck (there are 2-3 I think) it’ll be pretty hard for it to leave you strand it because the tool allows you to override most faults. Plenty of Ford parts in the trucks too people are finding out to get you MUCH cheaper replacement parts like switches, relays, etc. Its an old enough platform that every fix is well documented online.

It has the V8, persiscly for the reasons listed by adamftw. Since it is off-road very regularly it needed the two speed transfer case, which for the 2014+ trucks is almost impossible to find; there are only ever a couple for sale at a time in the whole country and are usually wrongly listed. For a while I had a running list of all the 2014+ trucks with the heavy duty package, and let’s just say they are very rare and expensive.

Having driven trucks with both engines, I definitely prefer the V8, it feels a lot less stressed and is much smoother. The V6 seems to be working really hard to make the power where the V8 is effortless.

I spent this morning scouring cars.com and once I figured out what the controls for low range looked like, I noticed that none of the newer ones had it like you said! 2013ish it’ll be if I  go that route as this will be a part-time off road rig. Thank you all for your advice and knowledge!

No problem!  They do pop up every once in a while, you can try searching for “heavy duty package” and variations of that, but at any time there might be a handful in the entire country for sale.
